It was approved on February 2, 1985 and received the ratification of the Andorran people by referendum on March 14, 1985.

The Constitution was signed by the two co-princes of Andorra, the President of the French Republic and the Bishop of Urgel, positions held at that time by François Mitterrand and Joan Martí Alanis respectively.

The new Constitution stipulates that these two offices hold the figure of head of state. According to the Constitution, the head of the executive power is the Head of the Government of Andorra.
