It is a large, mainly herbivorous artiodactyl mammal that inhabits sub-Saharan Africa. It is a semi-aquatic animal that inhabits rivers and lakes. The hippopotamus is easily recognizable by its barrel-shaped torso, huge mouth and teeth, body with smooth and almost hairless skin, stubby legs and its large size. It is the third largest land animal by weight.
It is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world and is often considered the fiercest animal in Africa.
