Descrizione

The antoninian was introduced during the reign of Caracalla, and to its official name, Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, we owe the name by which the coin is known, at the beginning of 215, as a silver coin similar to the denarius, slightly larger and whose effigy represented the emperor with a radiate crown.

Despite the official value set, the weight of the antoninian was never more than 1.6 times that of the denarius, which it completely replaced during the rule of Gordian III. As the political and economic situation of the Roman Empire worsened, the antoninian was gradually devalued, with the addition of copper and tin, so that it became only a fleece alloy, with a poor contribution of silver but similar in appearance to it.
