The Story of the Virgin of Pilar

The origins of this devotion date back to 40 AD, when, according to Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. James the Apostle in Cesaraugusta (modern-day Zaragoza) on January 2nd. Mary is said to have visited him "in mortal flesh"—before her Assumption—and left behind a jasper column, popularly known as "El Pilar," as a testament to her visit.
