Le 28 juin 1914, l'archiduc François-Ferdinand d'Autriche, héritier du trône de l'Empire austro-hongrois, est assassiné, déclenchant ainsi la Grande Guerre. Cette tentative d'assassinat du Serbe de Bosnie Gavrilo Princip fut le déclencheur et aboutit à l'ultimatum des Habsbourg au Royaume de Serbie. Immédiatement après, les vieilles alliances du XIXe siècle furent invoquées, et quelques semaines plus tard, le carrousel des déclarations de guerre commença. La domination coloniale européenne en Afrique et en Asie-Pacifique a signifié l'extension du conflit à l'échelle mondiale.
