Description

The Silver Crown of Amadeo I of Savoy

Amadeo I of Savoy, a monarch with a brief but significant reign, arrived in Cartagena on December 30, 1870, and reached Madrid on January 2, 1871. Upon his arrival, he paid homage at the Basilica of Our Lady of Atocha to the late General Prim, his main supporter, who had been assassinated just days before. This somber start marked the beginning of his tumultuous reign.

After swearing the oath of allegiance to the Spanish Constitution, Amadeo I was officially proclaimed King of Spain. His time on the throne, however, was marked by widespread opposition, uniting factions as diverse as republicans and Carlists against him.
