Description
The Alfonso XIII "Duro" Coin
Alfonso XIII of Bourbon (Madrid, May 17, 1886 – Rome, February 28, 1941) reigned as King of Spain from birth until the proclamation of the Second Republic on April 14, 1931. He officially assumed power on May 17, 1902, at the age of 16.
Historical Context
During his reign, Spain faced significant challenges that ultimately led to the collapse of the liberal monarchy:
- Lack of political representation for broad social groups.
- Dire conditions for the working class, especially rural communities.
- Issues stemming from the Rif War in Northern Africa.
- Catalan nationalism, fueled by Barcelona’s influential bourgeoisie.
The political instability, sparked by the Disaster of 1898, prevented turn-based governments from establishing a functional liberal democracy. This led to the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, which Alfonso XIII endorsed.
After the dictatorship's failure, Alfonso XIII attempted a return to democratic normality to reform the system. However, he was abandoned by the political class, who felt betrayed by his previous support for the dictatorship.
Following the municipal elections of April 1931, interpreted as a referendum on monarchy versus republic, Alfonso XIII went into exile. He died in Rome, and his remains were later moved to the Royal Pantheon of the Monastery of El Escorial in 1980.
