Relive History with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) was the first public transportation railroad in the United States and one of the most iconic of its time, operating from 1830 to 1987. After merging with the Chessie System, its lines are now managed by CSX Transportation.
Founded to connect Baltimore merchants with settlers in the Appalachian Mountains, the B&O played a pivotal role in American history, especially during the Civil War, as its owners were Union sympathizers supporting the North's efforts.
Known for its technological advancements, the B&O was a pioneer in operating steam locomotives and building historic railroad infrastructure. Its passenger trains were also renowned for their prestige and luxury. Moreover, the railroad achieved cultural icon status as one of the four railroads featured in the original version of the Monopoly board game.
