Am 28. Juni 1914 wurde Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand von Österreich, Thronfolger der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie, ermordet, womit der sogenannte Große Krieg begann. Dieses Attentat des bosnischen Serben Gavrilo Princip war der Auslöser und führte zum Ultimatum Habsburger an das Königreich Serbien. Unmittelbar danach wurden die alten Allianzen des 19. Jahrhunderts beschworen, und wenige Wochen später begann das Karussell der Kriegserklärungen. Die europäische Kolonialherrschaft in Afrika und im asiatisch-pazifischen Raum bedeutete die Ausweitung des Konflikts auf globales Niveau.
